Militants kill one in attack on interior ministry in Kabul

Militants launched a gun and bomb attack on the interior ministry in Kabul on Wednesday, killing a policeman in the latest chilling demonstration of their ability to strike at the heart of the Afghan capital.

At least one bomb went off at the first checkpoint of the ministry's compound before attackers exchanged gunfire with security forces, according to officials. Interior ministry spokesman Najib Danish said one policeman was killed and five were wounded.

Earlier, a senior police official said a auto bomb was detonated near the ministry's entrance and then a gun battle between attackers and members of the security forces broke out. The Amaq statement did not provide the names or specify the number of attackers.

Nicholson said that by wearing US military uniforms, militants were trying to confuse security forces and delay their response to the attack.

Mr. Danish, the ministry spokesman, said the assailants had been in vehicles that made it seem as if they were from the global coalition.

Afghan government forces have retaken control of a district headquarters in the northern province of Takhar that was briefly seized by Taliban fighters, a spokesman for the provincial governor said.

The Taliban dismissed the report as "propaganda" and said the attack had hit two civilian houses in Musa Qala, killing five civilians and wounding three.

The Taliban and a local Islamic State affiliate have carried out a wave of attacks, mainly targeting security forces and the country's Shiite minority, that have killed hundreds of people.

After pushing out fighters in Farah, Afghan and United States forces continued to pursue them, Nicholson told reporters at the Pentagon via video link.

He would not identify the figures involved in the negotiations, except to say that they included mid- and senior-level Taliban officials.

Another example of a failed enemy attack took place today, the general said.

The Taliban claimed the attacks in both provinces.

Al Jazeera's Jennifer Glasse, reporting from Kabul, said it was a complex attack as fighters attempted to enter the heavily fortified ministry.

A senior ministry official said one attacker blew himself up inside the compound and another was resisting from a watchtower as a plume of dust and smoke rose over the sprawling site.

"But our police said that at least two civilians were either killed or injured in today's attack", he said.
