Gulf Coast braces for Subtropical Storm Alberto

Alberto was expected to bring heavy rain and severe wind to Florida and other parts of the Gulf Coast.

The storm had maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour and was moving north at 9 miles per hour.

A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect from the Suwannee River in Florida to the Alabama/Florida border. The storm, coming on the last day of the Memorial Day weekend, was expected to scramble holiday travel.

The NHC said: "Heavy rainfall will lead to a significant risk of flash flooding across the Florida Panhandle, much of Alabama, and western Georgia through tonight, spreading northward into northern Georgia, the western Carolinas, and Tennessee on Tuesday".

The center of Subtropical Storm Alberto will likely reach the northern U.S. Gulf Coast Monday afternoon or evening.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for an area stretching from MS to North Carolina that is home to millions of people. "Hazardous storm surge is possible along portions of the central and eastern Gulf Coast beginning Sunday". The morning will be wet, but then we'll have a few hours of dry weather during the afternoon before the chance of a pop-up storm returns later in the day.

As Alberto's center heads inland - deprived of the warm waters that fuel tropical weather systems - the storm was expected to steadily weaken. This is the area that has the potential to feel tropical storm force winds.
