Alberto makes landfall in Florida

For Central Florida, scattered showers and storms are expected on Monday.

AccuWeather said Alberto is becoming more organized as it hovers in the eastern Gulf of Mexico and is gaining strength.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for a stretch of coastline between Aucilla River in Florida's Big Bend and the Alabama-Florida border.

The storm had maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour (85 kph) and was moving north at 8 miles per hour (13 kph). People are cautioned not to swim or play in the Gulf because the storm will kick up unsafe rip currents.

The storm system could move slowly through Upstate; if so, that would increase the chances of heavy rain.

Florida Governor Rick Scott issued the declaration for all 67 counties in his state.

A two- to four-foot storm surge or rise in water is still expected along the coast to the right/east of where Alberto makes landfall.

If you are heading to the Florida beaches or along the Gulf Coast starting in MS, you will still be under the Tropical Storm Watch and a Storm Surge Watch into Tuesday because Alberto is tracking closer to the Florida Panhandle.

Tropical Storm Alberto has already caused major rain and wind as it passed by the west coast of Cuba.

"Rains in Cuba could produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides". The storm was moving north at about 14 miles per hour, he added, "so not real fast".

The storm is the first storm of this year's hurricane season, coming a few day before the season officially starts on June 1.

In Gulf Shores, Alabama, webcams showed beaches starting to fill up as the storm's track shifted slightly east away from the region, but red flags on the beach warned beachgoers to stay out of the rough water. "So how often can you say you rode a storm out?"

The storm is expected to make landfall early Monday morning on Florida's Panhandle.

Subtropical Storm Alberto moves northbound over Northwest Florida Monday evening bringing heavy rain, gusty winds and a risk of severe storms to South Alabama and South Georgia. In fact, upper 80s will be widespread inland tomorrow with low 80s at the coast before sea breezes knock the numbers back into the 70s there.

Jeffrey Medlin, meteorologist in charge at the National Weather Service's Mobile office, warned that even after the storm moves north there will still be swells coming up from the south that could cause risky rip currents.

States of emergency were declared in Florida, Alabama and MS on Saturday as upwards of 15 inches of rain is forecast for the national Memorial Day weekend holiday.
