Philip Roth Quotes: Trump A 'Boastful Baffoon' And Other Memorable Writings

Through the years, Philip Roth has won wide acclaim for his novels - but had a rockier time seeing his work adapted by Hollywood.

American novelist Philip Roth has died aged 85.

He first achieved fame for his 1969 novel Portnoy's Complaint, about a horny teenager named Alexander Portnoy.

Roth, the author of groundbreaking works such as "Portnoy's Complaint", "Goodbye Columbus" and "The Human Stain", died of congestive heart failure, said friend and fellow writer Judith Thurman. He tackled the issue of racial identity in "The Human Stain" (2000), imagined what America might have been like if Charles Lindbergh had won the presidency in 1940 in "The Plot Against America" (2004), and examined American dreams in the late 1960s and early 1970s in "American Pastoral" (1997), for which he won the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

His biographer, Blake Bailey, said the author died surrounded by "lifelong friends who loved him dearly", adding he was "a darling man and our greatest living writer".

Novelist Philip Roth was presented with the National Humanities Medal in 2011.

He asked Europe to "make up for [its] silence" when the USA violated the 2015 deal, and to "stand up against the U.S. sanctions". The 2015 accord rests on lifting sanctions and allowing business with Iran in exchange for Tehran curbing its nuclear program.

Readers have long argued over the true level of autobiography in Roth's novels and the character Nathan Zuckerman, whose passage from aspiring young writer to socially compromised literary celebrity Roth traced in five novels, has generally been seen as the author's alter ego.

Born in Newark, New Jersey - a state that would appear often as a setting in his fiction - Roth grew up in a Jewish, middle-class family and attended Rutgers University before transferring to Bucknell University and a stint in the U.S. Army. The son of an insurance salesman, Roth earned a bachelor's degree at Buckle University and a master's degree in English from the University of Chicago. He famously offered one writer who had just published his first book this advice, as chronicled in The Paris Review: "I would quit while you're ahead". He said at the time that he made the decision to step away from writing after rereading all his books. That, however, did not last: "My humiliation before the Yeshiva belligerents-indeed, the angry Jewish resistance that I aroused virtually from the start-was the luckiest break I could have had", he said.

Claire Bloom was his second wife, with the pair exchanging vows in 1990 and separating in 1995.

"I don't want to read any more of it, write any more of it, and I don't even want to talk about it anymore ..." It's enough. I no longer feel this dedication to write what I have experienced my whole life'. Called "one of the dirtiest books ever published" by The New Yorker, Portnoy's Complaint was frank about sex, angered some Jewish leaders and was a commercial hit, later spawning a 1972 film adaptation starring - again - Benjamin, as well as Karen Black and Lee Grant. He married Margaret Martinson Williams.

Some critics said Roth's novels exposed him as a self-hating Jew who played on negative stereotypes or generally cast Jews in a bad light.
