Incumbent Manchin has financial edge in US Senate race

In a state where Trump claimed his largest margin of victory in 2016, Republican voters heeded warnings from the president and his allies in Washington against supporting Blankenship.

The Republican primary in West Virginia remains too close to call.

West Virginia coal baron and convicted criminal Don Blankenship spent nearly $3 million - almost entirely from his own pocket - only to lose the state's GOP primary to West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, who raised about half as much. Morrisey was eventually declared the victor; he'll face incumbent Democrat Joe Manchin in a contest that could decide control of the Senate.

As she seeks re-election this year, McCaskill likely will face a more formidable candidate in Josh Hawley, the Missouri attorney general.

Blankenship aggressively attacked McConnell in his campaign.

"Obviously the right thing happened here", the adviser said.

Harris cast the primary as a battle for "the heart and soul of the Republican Party". Blankenship finishing a distant third with just under 20 percent.

There was no love lost between McConnell and Blankenship. In a campaign spot, Blankenship had accused "Swamp Captain Mitch"-he meant Mitch McConnell, the Senate Majority Leader, from the neighboring state of Kentucky-of getting rich off of his "China family", and creating millions of jobs for "China people".

Hopelessly behind in West Virginia, Blankenship conceded defeat Tuesday night. The text reads "Thanks for playing, Don".

Blankenship defended his language to a Roll Call reporter, saying, "We're confused on our staff as to how it can be racist when there's no mention of a race".

Lightning strike quickly, beat Bruins
Palat soon doubled the lead when he swooped in front of the net and deflected Victor Hedman's blue-line shot past Rask. The Bruins were left searching for the energy in the building that had dissipated since Rancourt ran off the ice.

Despite the slate of recent good news, Republicans can not be complacent and assume a favorable outcome in November. "That doesn't mean it won't change".

"I think the enthusiasm is clearly on the side of people who want a different direction for this country and want a different direction for this state", he said. "And I am staying upstairs so I don't have to worry about a DUI or anything".

Morrisey, Blankenship, and Jenkins emerged as frontrunners and kept that lead throughout the campaign.

And the other candidates were feeling it.

The CNN poll was conducted by SSRS May 2-5 among a random national sample of 1,015 adults reached on landlines or cellphones by a live interviewer. "They are showing that Blankenship and I are tied". "There was only one conservative West Virginia Republican in that race and he was Don Blankenship".

But the surge never came to fruition and Blankenship came up significantly short. Both parties view the general election as key to Senate control for the next two years.

"I will do what I do", he said.

It's Trump's Party: On Tuesday, not one Trump critic won a Republican primary. "And I just don't think he can pull it off". Now, I know there's still some ardent die hard Donald Trump supporters out there but as for the rest of them they could do without him.

On Thursday, Mr. Thomas said Mr. Blankenship is "a man of his word" and said he has not ruled out a third-party bid.

Now, Trump has to decide how aggressively he'll back Morrisey over Manchin. "That's all I have ever said", he said. He added: "Tremendous voter energy and excitement, and all candidates are those who have a great chance of winning in November".
