Amazon bringing 3000 more jobs to Canada

Amazon has announced plans to expand its Vancouver Tech Hub at The Post, an office and retail redevelopment that preserves the Canada Post building, one of the most important examples of Vancouver's mid-century architecture. These new jobs will focus on Amazon web services, Audible and Alexa.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appeared at the event with Vancouver employees at the site of a planned 416,000 square foot Development Center, which is scheduled to open in 2022.

The company now has about 1,200 workers in the city, according to Rohit Prasad, a Boston-based vice president and head scientist of Amazon Alexa.

Inc. said it would add 3,000 high-tech jobs with the expansion of its Vancouver Tech Hub.

The Seattle-based company said in a press release that it will open the doors of a new office in Boston's waterfront Seaport development in 2021, allowing it to double its workforce in the city. More than 6,000 people now work for Amazon in Canada, including 1,000 researchers and engineers in Vancouver at several sites. Even without large subsidies, Amazon's second headquarters would drive up the already high cost of housing in Boston, overburden crowded roads and rail lines, and gobble up scarce labor, some critics worry. In June 2017, Amazon opened a corporate office in Toronto and in November 2017, the company confirmed plans to open a second Vancouver office in 2020, bringing another 1,000 jobs to the city. Should Amazon expand its Seaport offices and lease an additional 610,000 square feet of commercial space, which would house an additional 2,000 workers, it will receive an additional $5 million property-tax breaks. Amazon has stated that they will be filling over 3,000 new positions and the vast majority will be focusing on the technology and business.

"Are we going to have people that Amazon is going to be able to hire, and I say absolutely yes", Simon Fraser University cloud computing professor Bill Klug said.
