March to address local gun violence

- Fifteen students from five Los Angeles high schools are heading to Washington, D.C.to participate in the March for Our Lives rally against gun violence on Saturday.

A new Marist Poll released Friday found that 52 percent of the respondents said the the marches "will make no difference" in helping further the cause of the marchers, which include many students prompted to demonstrate after last month's school shooting in Parkland, Florida.

The "March for Our Lives" is being replicated in more than 830 cities around the world, including Vancouver.

Feinstein said she thought the massacre at Columbine High School in Colorado, in 1999, would be the last school shooting.

Mostly high school students from area schools and some UVA students will board buses to the nations capital to make their voices heard on the issue of gun violence.

"Over the years, people have told us how everytime there has been a school shooting, they were just waiting for the government to do something", Khalsa recalled. Later, they discovered the "horrible, disgusting things that happened", she said.

As a result there have been no nationwide studies done on issues such as who owns America's hundreds of millions of guns, how many homes have guns, how often they are stolen, if better training for users might improve safety, or whether concealed carry permits increase or decrease risk. "And I can't be silent when there are solutions right in front of us that can prevent the horrific daily toll of gun violence on our country". Survivors are among those leading the march efforts.

The survivors of the Florida shooting "have created a movement that is going to shift the conversation on gun violence", Gonzalez said. The march will begin at noon, following the same route that participants took during the Women's March in January, which ended at Whirled Pies Downtown, 199 W. Eighth Ave.

The event is being organized by Democrats Abroad Vancouver, March On Vancouver and Act Now, along with local students.

The march will also be held on the same weekend as the National Cherry Blossom Festival.

Local organizers have been meeting to plan the event.
