Chiefs Trade Marcus Peters to Rams

The Chiefs are expected to receive draft pick compensation back from the Rams.

Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star reports that the 49ers also expressed interest in making a deal for Peters in talks that went on over the last three weeks. Peters, a two-time Pro Bowler who was named first-team All-Pro in 2016, has compiled an NFL-leading 19 interceptions since being drafted 18th overall three years ago.

Johnson had his best season in 2015, when he intercepted seven passes, but his game has slipped a bit the past two seasons.

That game wrapped up a four-game losing streak for the Chiefs. Hunt has also met with Peters in the past to discuss his protests during the national anthem.

For the time being, the Rams have acquired a top-level talent with only a $1.74 million cap hit the 2018 season while the Chiefs are taking on a $1.3 million cap hit.

Peters had several issues last season. Now, it appears he has been traded.

In addition to trading away Smith after an MVP caliber season, the Chiefs have now traded their best defensive player and have effectively opened the door for anyone else in the AFC West to come in and claim the division crown.

This is the second trade involving a premier player for Kansas City in less than a month.

Specifically, Ballard previously scouted and performed pre-draft evaluations on the controversial cornerback while serving as the Kansas City Chiefs Director of Football Operations-ultimately convincing the Chiefs top brass that Peters was a worthy first round selection in 2015. They visited with Vontae Davis recently and reportedly had interest in David Amerson before he signed with the Chiefs. The Rams do not have a second-rounder. The NFL league year doesn't start until March 14, so the deal will not be official until then, but for all intents is purposes, it's done.
