Google Assistant is adding Routines and location-based reminders

Last but certainly not least, Google is announcing the Assistant Mobile OEM program, enabling device manufacturers like LG, Sony and Xiaomi to build "deeper integrations" between the Assistant and features specific to non-Google phones. Back then the number of supported languages was said to be 25 by the end of the year, but today the company has officially announced that Assistant will speak more than 30 languages before we say hello to 2019. For example, on your way home from work, you could say, "Ok Google, let's go home", and your Assistant can rattle off traffic updates, text your partner to let them know you are on the way and start playing your favorite podcast. Additionally, Google will be adding multilingual support so that Assistant will be able to understand multiple languages fluently starting with English, French, and German. "If you prefer to speak German at work, but French at home, your Assistant is right there with you". For instance, you could say "Hey Google, good morning" and the Assistant would turn on your kitchen lights, play your morning Spotify playlist, and even read you your reminders, Now, the company says the feature will begin rolling out to users over the coming weeks, likely during and after MWC 2018. Wireless carriers can also tie into Google Assistant so that customers can ask about data use, adjust their service plans, and request customer service.

Google's announcement is somewhat of a response to Apple, which has allowed Siri to control iPhone settings for years.

Non-Google handsets - that it, any Android which isn't a Google Pixel - will soon be able to hear the "hey Google" or "okay Google" command while their screens are off.

Google is also adding a new aspect to location-based reminders. With Routines, you'll be able to use simple voice commands to accomplish all sorts of "routine" tasks. This Assistant Mobile OEM program has been in the works since MWC past year, apparently.

The ability to create location-based reminders with a Google Home smart speaker will also become available in the weeks ahead, so you can say things like "Remind me to print my report when I get to work". On the Google Home smart speaker, the assistant can now be set to understand either English, French, German or Japanese.

At the moment most digital assistants support various languages.

Google said Sprint Corp., LG Electronics Inc. and Sony Mobile Communications Inc. are among the companies now in the process of developing custom Assistant integrations.
