Household cleaning products may harm lung function in women

Latest research shows that household cleaning products significantly affect lung function among the women.

Although the study had some limitations, such as including only a small population of women who did not clean and men who worked as cleaners, Øistein Svanes still concluded that, "The take home message of this study is that in the long run cleaning chemicals very likely cause rather substantial damage to your lungs".

The results showed that women who cleaned their house as little as once a week or as professional cleaners, they had an "accelerated" decline in lung capacity. They found the amount of air women could forcibly exhale in a second and the amount of air they could forcibly exhale total declined faster in those who cleaned at home or professionally.

However, there are few women who have never cleaned, and only a small group of men working as cleaners that the researchers were able to analyse. Researchers looked at data from more than 6,200 people over 20 years.

"While the short-term effects of cleaning chemicals on asthma are becoming increasingly well documented, we lack knowledge of the long-term impact", explained senior study author Cecile Svanes, MD, PhD.

As you might have noticed above, the study surprisingly found that women were more badly affected by the impact of cleaning chemicals than men.

The researchers said people should be careful choosing how they clean the surfaces in their homes.

The study did find that asthma was more prevalent in women who cleaned at home (12.3 per cent) or at work (13.7 per cent) compared to those who did not clean (9.6 per cent).

There was no difference found in the long-term lung function of the men who said they clean regularly and those that didn't, meaning it is possible that women are simply more susceptible to the effects of the chemicals.

The authors suggest that the reduction in lung capacity happens because cleaning chemicals irritate the mucous membranes lining the airways, which over time results in persistent changes in the airways.

The study authors advised avoiding the use of such cleaning products and instead go for microfiber cloths and water.

He added that public health officials should strictly regulate cleaning products and encourage producers to develop cleaning agents that can not be inhaled.
