Walmart Offers an Easier Way to Dispose of Prescription Opioids

The company said on Wednesday that the solution is called "DisposeRx" and consists of a packet with ingredients that, when combined with warm water and emptied into a pill bottle, neutralize leftover medications so they can be disposed of without worry. The company also will offer a packet every six months to patients with a regular opioid prescription. The packets are free of charge and available at 4,700 Walmart and Sam's Club stores with pharmacies.

"The best part is that patients don't have to take the drugs back to a location", Marybeth Hays, Wal-Mart's head of consumables and health and wellness in the US, said in an interview.

The move comes as the USA grapples with the scourge of opioid addiction, an affliction that often begins when chronic-pain sufferers fill a prescription at a retail pharmacy chain such as Wal-Mart, CVS or Walgreens.

Last week, a federal judge granted Walmart and the other defendants a preliminary injunction preventing the case from being brought in tribal court.

Most recently, CVS joined the fight against opioid abuse by expanding its prescription drug disposal program to 750 of its pharmacies across the country. The disposal kit can also work on any form of opioids.

Walmart pharmacies in Rhode Island and Washington will offer an alternative free disposal solution until third-party testing of DisposeRx has been completed in those states.

The move by Walmart is the latest precaution being taken to cut down on opioid abuse. However, the retailer does not accept the return for disposal of the drugs that it sells. CVS and Walgreens now offer medication-disposal kiosks at hundreds of locations, a service that Wal-Mart doesn't provide.

According to Sen. John Boozman R-Ark., "about one-third of medications go unused", which can prove to be risky - especially when children or teens have access to them. "Too frequently, those harmful narcotics stay un-secured where children, visitors or teens may have access", Arkansas Senator John Boozman said in an announcement. "I commend Walmart for taking this innovative approach to help keep unused prescription drugs out of the wrong hands".
