"In the raids conducted jointly by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Uttar Pradesh Police, almost Rs 97 crore in old currency notes have been recovered", principal secretary (Home) Arvind Kumar told reporters in Lucknow.

As on November 8, 2016, when the note-ban was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, there were 1,716.5 crore pieces of Rs 500 and 685.8 crore pieces of Rs 1,000 notes in circulation, totalling Rs 15.44 lakh crore.

"Received information of presence of demonetised currency worth crores at a person's residential premises in Kanpur, a raid was conducted, RBI and I-T dept officials informed, the final amount not ascertained as search and counting is underway, questioning is also on, ' said AK Meena, SSP, Kanpur".

It took a team of 25 investigators drawn from the income-tax department, the National Investigation Agency and the crime branch the whole night to count the money. Khatri and some others connected to him are being interrogated.

NIA got the information that huge amount of demonetised currency was being stored in an under construction house in the Swarup Nagar locality of Kanpur. They were arrested along with the builder.

The cash includes demonetised notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denominations worth Rs 97.60 crore. The currency belonged to four-five "individuals or companies" including a distinguished detergent-maker, an NIA official said.

As many as 16 people, including a prominent builder, were arrested in connection with the seizure of almost Rs 97 crore in demonetised currency notes kept in gunny bags stacked inside a bed from the builders ancestral house here.
