Within two days, however, Kyler Baughman was rushed to a Westmoreland County emergency room, then flown to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh where he died not even 24 hours later, WPXI writes.

More than a thousand miles away in Texas, 37-year-old Nita Negrete tested positive for the flu that quickly turned to pneumonia. "I'll go rest a little bit, '" adds his mother. Symptoms of the flu, like body aches and congestion or a cough, can sometimes be written off as a bad cold, but the infection actually leads to thousands of deaths each year, according to Centers for Disease Control data.

"The immediate cause of death was multi-organ failure due to septic shock due to influenza", the spokesperson continued.

So how do you know it's time to seek medical attention? Old people, young children, and people with existing medical conditions are prone to complications when they caught the flu virus.

So far this season, more than 40,000 cases of the flu have been reported. Sometimes incorrectly called blood poisoning, sepsis is the body's often deadly response to infection.

While it is not required, the CDC does suggest that everyone over the age of 6 months should get a flu vaccine every year.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta previously told CNN that most people who die from the flu have an "underlying illnesses or a weakened immune system".

Baughman was known to family and friends as a health buff, riding motorbikes and lifting weights.

Fiancee Olivia Marcanio recalled that day, saying Kyler had come home and laid down complaining that his chest hurt.

According to his family, Kyler did not receive his flu vaccination. It is unknown if having the flu shot would have prevented Baughman from getting sick (sometimes the flu shot is for a different strain and doesn't protect against the sickness), but it's a possibility.

"It doesn't seem real", Mrs. Baughman told WPXI.

Now, the Baughmans of Latrobe, Pa., are warning other parents and those with flu symptoms to take it seriously.

Kyle Baughman was an active gym-goer prior to falling ill with influenza and died shortly after he subsequently contracted sepsis, WXPI reports.

Writing on Facebook, father Todd said: 'We are without words for the passing of our only son Kyler Baughman.
