For the Dukes, today didn't represent the former.

North Dakota State and Robbie Grimsley, a 2015 graduate of Hutchinson High School, play in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Game on Saturday against James Madison. With the win, North Dakota State now has six of the last seven FCS national championships.

"What I love about my teammates this year is something that I've loved since I got to JMU", senior quarterback Bryan Schor said. Inside that locker room we have something that no one else in the country has.

The sea of purple and gold erupted when the Dukes quickly stopped the Bison on NDSU's first drive of the game. NDSU took over at the JMU 47-yard line.

NDSU 14 JMU 3 - Easton Stick completes a 50-yard touchdown pass to Darrius Shepherd with 4:14 left in the second quarter. NDSU took a 17-13 lead into the fourth quarter with the appearance of next score wins. The Bison defense knocked down pass to get the ball back on downs with 58 seconds to play. Asked what he could take from that game, Bison coach Chris Klieman said, "Nothing, really".

NDSU - Derrek Tuszka had 6 tackles and 2 sacks. It didn't help NDSU that JMU held a big advantage in the punting game.

"We just watched the film and decided what we liked and didn't like ... and moved on", Klieman said. For the second time in the half, a JMU miscue directly propagated a touchdown for the Bison. Schor finished 14 of 32 passing for 148 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions.

JMU senior defensive end Andrew Ankrah says, "If you give him time in the pocket to throw dropback passes, he'll make you play".

JMU - Riley Stapleton had 7 catches for 107 yards.

"It's hard to put into words, but this culture is awesome, the fans, the coaches, the players.it's so special", said Bison wide receiver Darrius Shepherd, who had a 50-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter.

Both James Madison and North Dakota State practiced Thursday in Frisco, and the first 30 minutes of practice was open to the media.

James Madison, with all of the momentum on its side, advanced the ball to the 19-yard line with 1:53 left, but its only positive gain on the ensuing four plays earned one yard. "If somebody would've put a mic in front of me at the half I would've told them we were winning the ballgame. That's what it came down to. the plays were there".

But cornerback Marquise Bridges picked off Schorr at the 3-yard line and NDSU still had the lead. They had (only) 53 yards rushing in the first half. He said the difference in his sales from 2017 to 2016 was "the Bison week", or lack thereof.

"Good time to get the first one", Stick said. You could feel the air leaving the stadium as the Dukes brought the punting unit out with just over three minutes to play.

A scrambling Schor, under heavy pressure and off balance, heaved it in the end zone and the ball fell incomplete.
