FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY: New Year's Eve bitter cold expected

In Atlanta and Chicago, it will be the coldest New Year's Eve since welcoming in 2010, when the temperature bottomed out at 29 and 5 F, respectively.

Drizzle will still be possible even as temperatures fall to at or below freezing Saturday night into Sunday.

Wind chills Sunday evening will drop into the teens across the entire area.

It will be very cold for New Year's Eve into New Year's Day. Saturday, expect clouds to return with highs approaching 60 degrees.

We will see a slight "warming" trend, if you want to call it that, to end the week as highs moderate back to the lower 40s on Thursday and Friday, though clouds will hang tough with partly to mostly cloudy skies overall. Freezing/frozen Precipitation is still a bit of a question, though.

Very Cold Day Ahead For Green Country
Ice could make travel dangerous on New Year's weekend

These days could be the coldest so far this winter, the NWS reports.

To prepare for sub-freezing temperatures, NWS reminds residents to ensure frigid air won't damage pipes.

Areas along and north of I-20 that see this wintry mix will certainly see the chance for some ice glazing on the roads and maybe some light accumulation, especially on bridges and overpasses. Preparations should be completed sometime today through Saturday in order to avoid rain and the extreme cold.

Overnight lows will dip into the mid 20s across the Big Country and 30s in the Concho Valley. Highs Tuesday hold in the 30s, while 40s are possible Wednesday as both days will be mainly sunny.

Be sure to wrap outside faucets and provide a place for outdoor pets to get in out of the cold. But I want to give you enough time to make plans. For most of the area (including DFW), the best chance for icy conditions is from Sunday morning into early Sunday afternoon.
