Apple might be slowing down old iPhones to preserve battery life

Apple has acknowledged that the company slows the operations of older phones to help device batteries continue to perform as they age.

In a statement, the tech company said lithium-ion batteries become less capable of providing peak current demands in cold conditions when they have a low charge, or as they age over time.

The tech giant revealed in a statement, reported by Tech Crunch, that it released an update to its iOS operating system a year ago for its iPhone 6, 6S and SE products.

Apple said it released software past year that makes those models operate more slowly to countervail problems with their aging lithium ion batteries, which can sometimes cause operational problems or cause phones to unexpectedly shut down.

The batteries in older phones start to lose their oomph, especially if the devices have been repeatedly exposed to extreme temperatures.

Currently, affected models are iPhone 7, iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE, with other models potentially receiving the same feature in the future. If it is no longer under warranty, a new battery costs $78, Werner reported. It's to avoid random and sudden shutdowns, they say.

Installing a brand new battery in an older model sees performance return to normal speeds, the newspaper says.

Breakthrough in fight against Huntington's disease
The results of the present trial are being prepared to be presented at scientific meetings and published in scientific journals. Tests show his sister Sandy and brother Frank will develop the condition. "It's so hard to have that degenerative thing in you".

Once word of Poole's test results began to spread, Apple was effectively forced to issue a statement on the matter.

IPhone 6 and 6S users had similar issues previous year, says Alphr, before Apple rectified the "widespread problem" by releasing the speed-limiting software update. "Couldn't figure out why, but just thought that iOS 11 was still terrible to me".

Technology website Geekbench then analysed several iPhones running different versions of the iOS operating system and found some of them did indeed appear to have been deliberately slowed down.

"Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices", a spokesperson for Apple said. Unless the processors are capped with software that ties CPU performance to current (and over time, necessarily declining) battery conditions, they're created to shut the entire phone down when that happens.

He suggests Apple offer rebates or make it easy for consumers to buy new batteries.

He claims Apple's tactic of slowing down older iPhone models causes users to suffer - specifically those with the 7 or 7s - and take a hit to their wallets.
