Herm Edwards named head coach of ASU football

In a story that's been a few days in the making, the Arizona State Sun Devils will officially announced Herm Edwards as their new head football coach in a press conference on Monday.

What's more, the 63-year-old Edwards is jumping back into the fray under a "New Leadership Model" at Arizona State, where he's the "CEO" of the football program and "will be similar to an NFL approach using a general manager structure".

In the end, it doesn't matter as long as his Sun Devils "play...to win...the game" and make some noise in the Pac-12.

Hopefully, the big man upstairs takes no issue. He will be the 24th head coach in the history of the program. "Equally important, the head coach will be a dynamic and tireless recruiter", Ray Anderson, ASU's vice president of athletics, said in the release. Better known in the National Football League world than the college ranks, Edwards spent a combined eight seasons as the head coach for the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs. This the same Edwards who hasn't coached at any level in almost a decade and not in college sine the 1980s. He has not been in the college game since 1989 when he was a defensive backs coach for San Jose State.

UCLA To Appoint Chip Kelly As Head Coach
Kelly finished his time at OR with a 46-7 record as head coach (2009-12), including victories in the Rose Bowl and Fiesta Bowl. Kelly will be formally introduced to the UCLA community and to media on campus Monday afternoon.

Edwards posted a 39-41 record in five seasons with the Jets. In his three years with Kansas City he made the playoffs just once and went 6-26 in his last two seasons.

Edwards hasn't been a coach since 2008, but he has remained a visible figure thanks to his job at ESPN as an National Football League analyst. Edwards was known for his colorful ways when he coached the Chiefs, and that was the case Monday.

"Passion for my faith, my family and my occupation as a football coach are the things that have driven me back to the grass", Edwards said in a statement. "I am very excited and humbled to be the Arizona State head football coach".
