USA Today Sports first reported Sunday afternoon that Tennessee was working to finalize a deal with Schiano. The defeat ended UT's year at 4-8, the first eight-loss season in program history.

It appears the Tennessee Volunteers have made a decision on who will be their next Head Coach. Schiano spent a little over a decade as the head coach of Rutgers University.

Schiano is now assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Ohio State.

Although Schiano has been an assistant at Ohio State the last two seasons, he posted a 68-67 record as Rutgers' head coach from 2001-11 and had an unsuccessful two-year stint coaching the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Rutgers had not been to a bowl game since 1978 when Schiano took the job.

Schiano is now Ohio State's defensive coordinator, be he has a relationship with Tennessee athletic director John Currie.

Was Schiano being considered throughout the coaching search?

Currie reportedly targeted Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen before turning his attention to Schiano. He had been out of coaching since 2013, after he was sacked by the Buccaneers following an 11-21 tenure in two seasons.
