Syrian army, allies, take last IS stronghold in Syria

Syria's army and its allies have surrounded and started to enter Albu Kamal, the largest town Islamic State still holds in Syria and Iraq, the pro-Hezbollah al-Manar television reported on Wednesday.

Coalition airstrikes have declined by more than 50% as US -backed forces in Iraq and Syria have largely destroyed the Islamic State's self-proclaimed caliphate and surviving militants have been killed or fled.

American and coalition planes decreased the number of bombs they've dropped on Islamic State (ISIS) targets by 60 percent in October because the terror group is on the run.

The Syrian army, alongside its Lebanese ally, Hezbollah, and other Shiite militias, and backed by Iran and Russian Federation, have seized swaths of central and eastern Syria in an advance against Islamic State this year. But a war monitor, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said it was not true that Albu Kamal was taken and there was still fighting in the area.

The two outlets said earlier that Syrian troops had linked up with Iraqi forces across the border.

Croft cautioned that USA operations against the terrorist group will continue for some time as ISIS morphs into an insurgent like force that is likely to try to exploit desert areas in Iraq and Syria.

Albu Kamal is located on the border with Iraq on the bank of the Euphrates.

Iraqi Popular Mobilisation Forces also took part in the operation, close to the border between the two countries.

IS retains control over some areas of desert and villages nearby, and a few other pockets in both Iraq and Syria.
