Navy rescues women and their dogs after five months adrift in Pacific

The US Navy came to their rescue as they were stranded on a sailboat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean for almost five months. About a month into the trip, bad weather caused their engine to lose power, then their mast was damaged, and, as they drifted across thousands of miles of open ocean, the water purifier stopped working.

The women were spotted on Tuesday by a Taiwanese fishing vessel 900 miles southeast of Japan, according to Honolulu station KHON TV.

Their engine broke down on May 30 during a bad weather but they thought they could continue to Tahiti using the wind.

"And both of them ... we actually thought it was lights out ... and they were horrific", said Appel. "The pride and smiles we had when we saw (U.S. Navy) on the horizon was pure relief".

"When she got on the telephone, she was very enthusiastic and she just sounded great", Appel said. Appel said after their rescue that she'd sent out a distress call daily for 98 days without response.

"You can't get any help at all because you're in the middle of nowhere", Fuiava said in a call with the media.

She answered the phone as she always does, wondering who wanted to sell her something, when she heard her daughter's voice on the other end of the line. "I thank God that he was watching over her and taking care of her", Joyce Appel said.

Although the Navy declared their boat, called the Sea Nymph, no longer seaworthy, Ms Appel said she hopes to eventually recover it and perhaps take it out again.

Surviving the experience has bonded the two friends who been close since they met in December 2016 while Fuiava was a security guard at the facility where Appel was doing work on her boat.

Meanwhile, Appel said the ordeal hasn't sworn her off planning a future ocean journey. "I waited and waited and waited to see when I would hear from her".

Appel's mother told reporters that the pair were down to their last gallon of water when they were rescued.

Sailors from the USS Ashland approach a boat with two Honolulu women and their dogs aboard as they were rescued after being lost at sea.

They had packed enough food that could last for a year, mostly dried goods like oatmeal and pasta.

"We would be lying if we didn't say that two women in a close space of 500 feet didn't get into it every once in awhile, but we didn't catfight or pull hair-we just threatened to throw each other overboard!"
