Cubs coach will be next Nationals manager

A search obviously starred immediately, and Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports has reported Chicago Cubs bench coach Dave Martinez is the choice to be the Nationals next manager.

Maddon has always been a fan of Martinez and thinks he would do a great job as a manager.

The Nationals fired manager Dusty Baker after they failed to advance in the NLDS, losing in five games to the Cubs. The Nationals also reached out to Houston Astros bench coach Alex Cora, who was already closing in on a deal to become the next manager of the Boston Red Sox at the time.

Colin Kaepernick invited to next meeting between National Football League owners and players
Many have attributed NFL teams' reluctance in signing him on his political activism and his protest of the national anthem. Because he didn't receive the formal invitation, it seems Kaepernick opted not to attend, though that is not certain.

Martinez experienced a decade-long education under Maddon, who is considered a forward-thinking type with a willingness to buck baseball tradition when needed.

Martinez had a 16-year career as a player from 1986-2001 for the Expos, Cubs, Rays, White Sox, Giants, Braves, Rangers, Reds and Blue Jays as an outfielder and first baseman. When Maddon became the Chicago Cubs' skipper before the 2015 season, Martinez followed him there, where together the pair helped lead the Cubs to the 2016 World Series title, the team's first championship in 108 years. A formal announcement isn't likely to come until Monday at the earliest, possibly not until after the World Series ends. The Nationals selected Bud Black to replace him but negotiations crumbled and Baker was given the job.

As the rookie manager takes over in Washington, his three-year deal reflects a commitment new to the Nationals. He worked for the Rays as an instructor for a couple years before coming on as the team's bench coach after the 2007 season, working under Joe Maddon.
