The application - filed by lawyers Jason Azzopardi, Karol Aquilina and Therese Comodini Cachia on behalf of the deceased's family - read that Daphne Caruana Galizia was brutally killed when a bomb in a vehicle she was driving exploded.

No group or individual has come forward to claim responsibility for the attack.

In a post published on her site just half an hour before the explosion she wrote: "There are crooks everywhere - the situation is desperate".

"Caruana Galizia revealed the Panama Papers and was the government's strongest critic", he said, calling for a independent probe of her killing.

He described her as "was one of my harshest critics, on a political and personal level" as he denounced her slaying. "I will not rest until justice is done", he promised, calling the island to the union.

Recently, Ms Caruana Galizia's outspoken blog had turned its fire on opposition politicians.

She wrote that Mr Muscat's wife, the country's energy minister and the government's chief-of-staff had offshore holdings in Panama to receive money from Azerbaijan.

Both Muscat and his wife denied the allegations. According to sources, one of her sons heard the blast from their home and rushed out to the scene.

Local media reports said Galizia had been receiving death threats, which she reported to police 15 days ago.

We will remind, on 3 April 2016, the global consortium of investigative journalism (ICIJ) in the framework of the project "archive of Panama" (Panama Papers) published a major investigation of the offshore world of hundreds of politicians, businessmen, sporstmenov and cultural figures.

European politicians and journalists expressed dismay at Caruana Galizia's death.

Caruana Galizia was a fearless journalist and blogger who exposed numerous offshore dealings of prominent figures in Malta.

Michelle Muscat was accused of being the beneficial owner of a secret Panama bank account, which Caruana Galizia had alleged was used to stash kickbacks from Azerbaijan's ruling family.

Muscat said he has asked the USA government and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for help investigating the auto bombing.

He called it a "barbaric attack on press freedom".

Julian Assange is known for his anti-corruption campaigns and had great sympathy for Daphne Caruana Galizia's battle against corruption in Malta.

On Twitter, Antonio Tajani, president of the European Parliament, said Caruana Galizia was a "tragic example" of a journalist who had "sacrificed her life to seek out the truth".
