Wind-Driven Fires Burn California Wine Country

The Press Democrat reports that mandatory evacuations were ordered after a blaze broke out late Sunday near Santa Rosa, which is 54 miles (87 kilometers) north of San Francisco.

Wildfires erupted in Northern California over the weekend, forcing residents in the wine country north of San Francisco to flee as homes went up in flames.

In Santa Rosa, patients at Kaiser Permanente hospital were safely moved to other facilities, according to the hospital's Twitter account.

Fires in Mendocino County triggered the closure of multiple roads along the 101 Freeway.

Many area roads are also closed, including Highway 37 and Highway 12.

"The gusts are very, very - they're tremendous and it's what makes this fire unpredictable".

In Napa County, firefighters were battling a 200 acre fire off Atlas Peak Road south of Lake Berryessa, Cal Fire reported. "There was smoke all over the area".

Three large fires raged through different parts of Napa County as of mid-morning, destroying property, causing evacuations and prompting Gov.

Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency in Napa, Sonoma and Yuba counties because of wildfires that the governor says are threatening thousands of homes. The Napa County Animal Shelter will hold smaller animals.

The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for the Bay area.

The influenced areas incorporate Sonoma, Napa, Yuba, Butte, Nevada and Orange.

Authorities have implemented forced evacuations in several rural neighborhoods and worked to clear out hospitals and senior centers in northwestern Santa Rosa. The winds were expected to subside at midday.

"Our neighbor called and told us the sheriff had come - we had to evacuate now", he said.

Napa Mayor Jill Techel said authorities had to evacuate Montecito Boulevard and Monte Vista Avenue in the city. One of the blazes in Sonoma County was at 300 acres and has been dubbed the Nuns Fire.

"We're focusing on making evacuations and trying to keep people safe".

"Around 3 a.m., there was a lot slamming of doors, shouting, auto engines revving, so, I get up and go downstairs", Jake Palmgren, a 20-year-old custom crush worker told Wine Enthusiast. "Certainly with day just breaking now, we are starting to see the structures that are affected", she said shortly after sunrise.

A Hilton Hotel was among the buildings that were left in ruins. KPIX reported flames near the Domaine Carneros winery.
