Rupp surged ahead for good with three miles remaining to win in 2hrs 9mins 20secs with Kenyan runner-up Abel Kirui, the defending champion, 28 seconds back and Bernard Kipyego, also of Kenya, third in 2:10:23.

Galen Rupp, 31, was the first American man to win the Chicago Marathon. "I feel that I have come second so many times before and winning feels great", Rupp, still excited from his achievement said after the race. Last year's victor Abel Kirui of Kenya was placed second while marathon record holder Dennis Kimetto did not finish.

"It's just incredible", Rupp said.

The women's race was won by Ethiopian world record holder Tirunesh Dibaba, who won in 2 hours 18 minutes and 31 seconds. Khannouchi was born in Morocco so Rupp is the first US born victor since 1982. "I worked very hard for this".

It made Rupp the first home victor since Moroccan-born Khalid Khannouchi in 2002 and the first American-born champion since Greg Meyer in 1982. I really wanted to wait.

"You train so hard to have a race like this and to have it all come together, words just can't describe the feeling when I came across the line". She missed the course record but clocked her second-fastest time ever.

The Ethiopian had set her sights on the course record of 2:17:18 and although that proved to be beyond her, Dibaba eased to victory nearly two minutes ahead of Brigid Kosgei of Kenya, while home favourite Jordan Hasay was third.
