ISIS' Claim in Vegas Shooting False, says Suspect's Brother

"As this event unfolds, we have determined, to this point, no connection with an worldwide terrorist group", said Special Agent Aaron Rouse, the top administrator of the Las Vegas FBI division, during an October 2 press conference.

The extremist group claimed that the shooter was "a soldier" who had converted to Islam months ago.

In a later statement from Islamic State, the militant group referred to the Las Vegas attacker by a nom de guerre of "Abu Abd al-Bar al-Ameriki".

The man, identified by police as Stephen Paddock, killed himself before police entered the hotel room he was shooting from, police said.

But extremism experts and US officials have cast doubt on the claim as Paddock appeared to have no link to radical Islamism, nor did he appear to be a practicing Muslim.

The claim was initially taken seriously by observers given the group's previous careful penchant for only claiming attacks ISIS for sure either directed or inspired.

The terrorist group published at least one English video on October 3 about the Las Vegas attack.

Three years after it declared its so-called Islamic caliphate across huge swaths of Syria and Iraq, ISIS has lost most of the territory and is on the run in its few remaining bastions.

Isis was also linked to a vehicle and knife attack in Edmonton, Canada, where a police officer found a flag used by the group in the perpetrator's auto.

He urged followers to "intensify one attack after another against the infidels", following a spike in global terror attacks.

Rouse was reacting to a statement ISIS released earlier, which read: "The Las Vegas attack was carried out by a soldier of the Islamic State and he carried it out in response to calls to target states of the coalition".

"More likely, ISIS's supporters will believe what the group says and not what is proven beyond a doubt by the Western media", Clarke added.
