VW's namesake brand, its largest division by sales, will spend 6 billion euros ($7.2 billion) through 2022 on its electric auto program which will be based on the new MEB platform underpinning over 20 purely battery-powered models.

The VW Group will continue to offer standalone internal-combustion powertrains, but it will have at least one hybrid or electric version of each of its roughly 300 models by then.

The German automaker plans to invest more than £18 bn pounds into the venture for zero-emission cars, with 80 new-electrified models by 2025 - 30 of which will be plug-in hybrids and 50 pure electric models.

Perhaps mindful of the emissions scandal of 2015, Matthias Müller, chairman of Volkswagen's board of management said: "We have got the message and we will deliver. People want to have clean air, and we want to make our contribution here", he said.

Volkswagen shows off a concept of its electric.

"They comply with the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) requirements and they meet the requirements and needs of our customers", he added.

Around $20 billion will be spent on developing electric vehicles which is double the budget originally proposed by VW earlier this year. By 2025, Volkswagen plans to offer 23 all-electric models.

Now, it has shown an update to one of those concepts at the Frankfurt motor show, the Volkswagen ID Crozz utility vehicle that debuted in April at the Shanghai auto show.

Prior to the scandal, German automakers were hesitant about electric cars because of the high costs and limited range.

Yet the Frankfurt show remains a very big deal for the home team: Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz luxury brand, Munich-based BMW AG, and Volkswagen, all of which will have giant display stands.
