Trump's son says met with Russian lawyer for damaging information on Clinton

USA intelligence agencies have concluded Moscow worked to tilt the 2016 presidential election in Trump's favor.

Donald Trump Jr. will testify in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday.

Donald Trump's eldest son has told Senate staffers he was open to receiving information about Hillary Clinton's "fitness, character or qualifications" when he accepted a meeting with a Russian lawyer a year ago. "We look forward to a professional and productive meeting and appreciate the opportunity to assist the committee", Futerfas said in a statement.

In a prepared opening statement for his meeting with Senate Judiciary Committee staffers, the president's eldest son again denied any Russia collusion claims and sought to explain the nature of contacts he has had over the years with Russian individuals.

Thursday's statement underlines the fact that his initial statement, which was reportedly dictated by the president in July, was misleading and false.

The June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower has been highly scrutinized since it was revealed earlier this year

Committee staff members met last month with Glenn Simpson, the co-founder of the strategic research firm that commissioned the unsubstantiated dossier that claims Trump conspired with Russian Federation to win the election.

It's been a long and rocky road that led to Trump Jr. winding up in front of the committee.

The meeting was publicly disclosed in July 2017, and Trump Jr. released several differing statements about the meeting before releasing copies of the emails that show the scheduling of the meeting. Shortly after the revelations that Trump Jr. attended the meeting with the intention of getting damaging information on Hillary Clinton, the watchdog group Common Cause filed a complaint to both the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Election Committee (FEC) alleging that Trump Jr. Trump explained that the meeting quickly shifted to the issue of Russian adoptions and a sanctions law opposed by the Russian government known as the Magnitsky Act.

"We want to do this in a thorough way that gets the most information possible", Warner said.

The president's oldest son is scheduled to speak privately Thursday with Senate committee staff investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election.

The senior Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee says questions remain about a meeting Donald Trump Jr. had with a Russian lawyer in June 2016.

Committee members Sens. Christopher Coons, D-Del., Dick Durbin, D-Ill., Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., were also seen entering or exiting the meeting.

Senate aides also could pursue other possible connections that the president's family had with Russian Federation.
