RI leaders hope to lure new $5B Amazon HQ

"We expect HQ2 to be a full equal to our Seattle headquarters", said Bezos, Amazon's founder and CEO.

The online giant, based in Seattle, said that the new site would be accompanied by as many as 50,000 jobs, with an average salary of $100,000.

The e-commerce giant Amazon on Thursday, September 7, announced that it is planning to build yet another headquarters called Amazon HQ2 in a now unknown city in the United States. Construction and operation of the second headquarters will likely require the hiring of tens of thousands more employees, which will also yield, according to Amazon, "additional investment in the surrounding community". Amazon claims that the city has an economic contribution of $1.40 for every $1 invested into the campus, which amounted to $38 billion from 2010 to 2016 alone.

Cities are already eager to be the new home for Amazon's second headquarters.

The company plans to hire many new employees for HQ2, but noted it'll also offer Seattle-based workers a chance to relocate as well.

"Amazon is opening the Amazon HQ2 Request for Proposal ('RFP') now", the company wrote in an official statement. Amazon says the second campus will eventually bring on another 50,000 full-time staffers. Municipalities wanting to submit a bid only have until October 19 to respond to Amazon's request for proposal. Rosslyn recently scored Nestle's US headquarters and Ballston has been active in trying to attract tech companies and fill soon-to-be-vacated office space. Further, even employees working in HQ1 now will be given an opportunity to move to HQ2, notes USA Today. Amazon recently snatched up Whole Foods Market for $13.7 billion.

To choose the city that will host the HQ2, Amazon says there will be a few "decision drivers", like incentive programs such as workforce grants, fee reductions, tax credits/exemptions, relocation grants and utility incentives.

With the promise of jobs and money, Amazon has also released its wish list for the qualities it wants in its new home-away-from-home.
