Josh Jackson outplays Will Grier to lead Virginia Tech past West Virginia

The Hokies followed with their best drive of the night, one that ended with a 12-yard touchdown run by Deshawn McClease that made it 17-10 with 9:51 left in the third.

On the second drive, Grier and company would generate a first down but that would be it as the Mountaineers would be forced to punt the football away for the second time in as many possessions.

Travon McMillian scored three plays later to give Tech the lead at the 6:30 mark. Hokies fans screamed along to "Enter Sandman" after Virginia Tech held the Mountaineers out of the end zone on two last plays from the 15.

The defenses continued to dominate, until a 42-yard Justin Crawford run through the middle of the Hokie defense sparked a 10 play, 86-yard drive for the Mountaineers that was capped with the game's first touchdown when Grier found David Sills in the front corner of the end zone just in front of the Virginia Tech band. Jackson completed 15 of his 26 passes, throwing for 235 yards and one touchdown.

Similar to Jackson, Grier was making his first start for West Virginia.

That miss would prove costly as West Virginia would engineer it's second touchdown drive of the night traveling 79-yards in eight plays for the second touchdown pass of the night to Sills.

On West Virginia's 4th series, Will Grier and the offense started to move the ball down the field and would face a 4th and 22 from the Virginia Tech 22 and would run a play action boot leg to the left that resulted in an interception. West Virginia is going to need all the help they can get from White, he's the only returning starter in the Mountaineer defensive backfield. The Mountaineers racked up 592 yards of total offense, becoming the first team to put up more than 500 yards of total offense on a Bud Foster-coached defense since Tulsa in the 2015 Independence Bowl. However, the Hokies would fail to convert on a 38-yard field goal to keep the score at 17-10 with 5:07 remaining in the third.
