Wilton Speight Gets Start For Michigan vs. Florida

New year, same question: Could Florida score enough to knock off a ranked opponent?

Sound familiar? It's not all that different than last season.

MI redshirt senior QB Wilton Speight went 11-of-23 passing for 181 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in Saturday's 33-17 victory over Florida. Junior running back Jordan Scarlett was expected to be focal point of the offense after a stellar sophomore season that saw him rush for 889 yards and six touchdowns, but the school announced Wednesday he will join a list of nine other players who are suspended for at least one game. Despite claiming the SEC East title in his first two years, something no other SEC coach has done in conference history, the Gators will need to put some offensive pressure on MI to set the tone for the season, especially with first time starter sophomore Feleipe Franks lined up under center come Saturday afternoon. Sure, one game doesn't make a season, but the MI defense looked awfully good this afternoon against the Gators.

Franks, trying to extend Florida's next drive, fumbled at the Gators' 37.

Black got a couple of opportunities early, and made the a lot of them, including catching a 46-yard touchdown on his first career reception (video in header).

There had been so much talk of Michigan's defense returning only one starter, but the defense was stifling and strangled the Gators' offense led by redshirt freshman quarterback Feleipe Franks and, later, Malik Zaire.

The Wolverines broke in a new offensive line, with three new starters - Patrick Kugler at center, Michael Onwenu at right guard and Nolan Ulizio at right tackle.

On Michigan's first offensive drive, they drove the length of the field and seemed to score, but an incorrect penalty call negated the touchdown.

Cleveland made a leaping grab for another first down as Florida made its way to midfield. The Florida Gators are not revealing who will play the starting quarterback.

Just about everything Zaire threw came off some type of rollout, designed or otherwise, and the drive ended when he was sacked on a similar play.

The 17th-ranked Gators were no match for physically superior MI, which ran 75 plays for 433 yards and struck a flawless balance between running (215 yards) and passing (218 yards).

MI continued to pound away. The hard hits came, but they were all laid out by the Wolverines. He never looked comfortable in the pocket. They even scored a touchdown on a sack that resulted in a fumble recovered in the end zone.

He looked, at times, like a left-handed Treon Harris.

Michigan's defense held Florida to 153 total yards, including 20 rushing.
