Thousands of acres burn in Los Angeles-area fire

A brush fire exploded to 8,000 acres on Saturday while prompting mandatory evacuations in Burbank, Glendale and Sunland-Tujunga, officials said, noting it was the largest blaze by acreage in Los Angeles city history.

Subdivisions full of houses are within a couple of kilometres of the flames, and officials say about 200 people have voluntarily evacuated their homes. High winds and a weeklong, triple-digit heat wave across the area helped fuel its growth, according to the L.A. Fire Department.

High winds created spot fires near the 210 Freeway and LAFD attempted to prevent the fire from hopping the freeway, anticipating it would burn at least 2,000 acres if it happened.

One home has been lost in the fire, according to the latest statement from the LA Fire Department.

"It's snowing ash from the Burbank fire, there was a huge pop followed by my power going out", said Cory Pratt, a filmmaker, on Twitter.

Some of the more than 500 firefighters had been on the job for a day straight as they tried to stop the flames from spreading farther.

Burbank police directed evacuees to McCambridge Park at 1515 Glenoaks Blvd.in Burbank, and in Los Angeles an additional evacuation shelter was established at Sunland Recreation Center at 8651 Foothill Blvd.
