Officials react to resignation of David Clarke as Milwaukee County Sheriff

Controversial Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke has resigned, the Milwaukee County Clerk told CBS affiliate WDJT.

But now Clarke has resigned his position as sheriff.

Milwaukee County Clerk George Christenson said he received a resignation letter from Clarke, but the letter did not say why the sheriff was leaving office more than a year before his term is up.

A spokesman for the governor said that process will begin as soon as he is officially notified about the resignation by Milwaukee County. Christenson says the letter doesn't give the reason for Clarke's resignation.

Conservative groups have called on Clarke to challenge Democratic U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin in 2018, but he has rejected that suggestion.

Clarke described "A war between rule of law and anarchy-seeking hate".
