Russian ambassador to Sudan found dead in swimming pool

Russia's ambassador to Sudan, Mirgayas Shirinskiy, was found dead in his swimming pool Wednesday - the fourth Russian envoy to die in just eight months.

Russia's RIA Novosti state news agency reported the veteran diplomat's death, citing the foreign ministry in Moscow.

Though there is no evidence to suggest anything suspicious about Shirinskiy's death, he is the latest in a long line of Russian emissaries to die in the past year.

"He was found dead in the swimming pool of his residence at 7:05 p.m.", Omar al-Mokhtar, a police spokesman, told AFP. Sudanese police have reportedly ruled that his death was not the result of an assassination attempt.

Alexander Kadakin, Russia's former ambassador to India, died in January after a brief illness and Andrey G. Karlov, Russia's ambassador to Turkey, was killed at an art gallery in Turkey. Russian embassy staff at the residence in Sudan's capital city called for medical assistance, but doctors were unable to save the ambassador's life.

The press secretary at Russia's embassy, Sergei Konyashin, said there were signs the ambassador had suffered a heart attack.

The ministry offered its condolences to the government and people of Russian Federation and praised Shirinsky's diplomatic efforts while in office.

Shirinskiy, a graduate of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) held diplomatic positions at Russia's embassies in Yemen, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Rwanda.

A report on the circumstances of the ambassador's death will be released as soon as detailed information is gained, the ministry said.
