In a statement earlier this week, Brussels said that eggs contaminated with the harmful chemical Fipronil might have been sold in some seven countries.

Britain, France, Sweden and Switzerland have all been warned to keep an eye out for tainted eggs arriving in their countries.

It is believed that the insecticide got into the food chain when it was illegally added to a product used to treat poultry for lice, fleas and ticks.

It is thought that fipronil was added to disinfectant used on some chicken farms.

The German agriculture ministry estimates that 10.7 million possibly contaminated eggs were delivered to Germany from the Netherlands, according to a report to be published in the Rheinische Post newspaper on Friday.

About 700,000 eggs have been sent to the United Kingdom from potentially contaminated Dutch farms, up from an early estimate of 21,000, the food watchdog has said.

Numerous eggs were mixed with others which had not come from affected farms so Fipronil residues would be highly diluted, the FSA said.

The probe into insecticide-infested eggs in Europe is intensifying with company officials in the Netherlands being arrested for their suspected involvement in a scandal that has led to millions of eggs being pulled from shelves.

Belgium and the Netherlands have for the past two weeks struggled to account for their failure to stop fipronil - a toxic insecticide banned for use on farm animals - entering barn eggs.

According to the Agency, in the United Kingdom infected mainly semi-finished products and processed products, where eggs are only one of many ingredients.

Luxembourg said eggs sold in branches of the discount supermarket Aldi had been withdrawn, with one batch containing so much fipronil it was unsafe to be eaten by young children.

Romanian authorities say they have seized a ton of imported eggs suspected of being contaminated.

Though no-one has been reported as falling sick, prosecutors said there is evidence that public health has been threatened by "the delivery or application of the biocide Fipronil in poultry houses in the egg sector".

A row has erupted over how long Belgian and Dutch authorities have known about the contamination. It is a joint action by the Dutch and Belgian authorities.
