Trump Spars With Australian Leader Over Refugees: 'I Hate Taking These People'

"You are worse than I am", Mr Trump told Mr Turnbull when the PM said his government refused to settle boat people in Australia in order to deter people smugglers. The Washington Post has obtained a transcript of the phone conversation between the two leaders shortly after President Trump entered office.

"You can not say that to the press", Trump told Pena Nieto according to the transcript of the January 27 call published by the Post on Thursday.

"Malcolm, why is this so important?"

'That is why they are in prison right now. "It is an embarrassment to the United States of America and you can say it just the way I said it".

Turnbull replied: "That is the point I have been trying to make".

"This is going to kill me", he said to Turnbull on January 27 during a conversation he described as "the worst call by far" during his nascent presidency, the Washington Post reported, citing a transcript.
