United States tests missile defense after North Korean ballistic launch

The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) was able to intercept a ballistic missile launched over the Pacific Ocean by a U.S. Air Force C-17 plane in the "successful" test - meant to simulate a real missile fired by Pyongyang.

A Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptor is launched from the Pacific Spaceport Complex Alaska during Flight Test THAAD (FTT)-18 in Kodiak, Alaska, U.S., July 11, 2017.

North Korea's missile test has prompted Seoul to deploy four additional THAAD units, according to a Reuters report.

US Missile Defense Agency director Lt. Gen. Sam Greaves said it's part of an effort "to stay ahead of the evolving threat", but did not provide specifics.

The drills involved South Korea's road-mobile ballistic missile, the Hyunmoo -2, and the USA forces' Army Tactical Missile System. After the recent launch of the North Korean leader Kim Jong UN said that the reach of the missiles were the USA mainland, and that sanctions pressure America encourages North Korea to develop nuclear weapons.

It was sacked by an Air Force Plane and intercepted by the defense system. It is reported by the missile defense Agency.

Hours later, the US then flew two B-1B bombers over the Korean peninsula in a show of force after the North Korean missile tests, the Air Force said in a statement on Sunday.

North Korea's missile launch test has heaped pressure on to the already frayed relationship the reclusive country has with its neighbors and the United States. The last time the USA tested THAAD, earlier this month, it said it successfully intercepted an intermediate-range missile target.

However, concerns were heightened in Washington and Seoul when Pyongyang tested its second ICBM Friday, which the US termed "reckless and unsafe".

"By threatening the world, these weapons and tests further isolate North Korea, weaken its economy, and deprive its people".

Following North Korea's second ICBM test, in a show of strength, the U.S. Army said they conducted a live-fire exercise using surface-to-surface missiles with the South Korean military. "The United States will take all necessary steps to ensure the security of the American homeland and protect our allies in the region", President Donald Trump had said in a statement.
