Karnataka appoints Revenna as new DIG, prisons

Karnataka government has transferred D Roopa, the Bengaluru DIG Prisons, to traffic department as commissioner for Road Safety and Traffic.

Roopa's sudden transfer has sparked outrage in the city jail with a section of inmates staging protest against the government move and demanding it be revoked.

An order from the Department of Personnel said Roopa, an Indian Police Service officer of 2000 Karnataka batch, had been "transferred with immediate effect". Her report not only spoke about preferential treatment to Sasikala but also about functioning of special kitchen which is a clear violation of prison rules.

Meanwhile, Roopa today said that the government has the right to transfer officers and followed the orders accordingly.

Sasikala is lodged at Parappana Agrahara central prison in Bengaluru ever since her conviction in February in the disproportionate assets case along with her two relatives V N Sudhakaran and Elavarasi, all serving a four-year jail term.

In her first report, the officer had mentioned that Rs. 1 crore was paid to the Director General of Prisons (DGP).

Rao categorically denied all the charges.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has ordered an inquiry into the allegations of Ms Sasikala's exceptional treatment in prison.

Roopa has now been appointed as commissioner for Road Safety and Traffic.

Revenna will also be the Chief Superintendent of Bengaluru Central Prison in place of Krishna Kumar, who was transferred without posting on Monday.

In a second report that DIG Roopa had submitted, she had alleged that the video evidence against both Sasikala and Telgi had been destroyed to weaken her case against them.

IPS officer D Roopa was instrumental in exposing the royal treatment that AIADMK chief Sasikala Natarajan had allegedly bought for herself with a Rs. 2 crore bribe.

"It is inappropriate on her part to share details with the media", Siddaramaiah told reporters in Mysuru, expressing open displeasure over the public comments by Roopa, whose report has also brought her superior and other prison officials under a cloud of bribery allegations. "It seems that the government wants to protect the illegal activities and is here to protect the convicts", he said.
