Easyjet shares fell by three-quarters of a per cent in early trading, while ITV shares rose by nearly 1.5 per cent. The new ITV chief also has media experience, having been CEO of Guardian Newspapers and then the wider Guardian Media Group.

The FTSE 100-listed budget airline said McCall will step down around the end of the year, and that it has already begun the search for her replacement.

EasyJet said McCall and her team had transformed the low-priced carrier, improving its operations and growing passenger numbers, resulting in a trebling of the share price and the payment of 1.2 billion pounds in dividends.

"This was a really hard decision for me to make", she said.

"She will leave EasyJet well set for future success".

McCall added: "I'm really pleased to be joining ITV". She will get a base salary of £900,000 - £41,000 less than Crozier; and her pension allowance has been reduced to 15% of her salary compared with her predecessor's 25%.

Ms McCall described ITV as "a fantastic company in a dynamic and stimulating sector".

McCall has also been a non-executive director of Burberry since 2014, sits on the board of the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and is a Trustee at the Royal Academy.

"I will always miss Easyjet and most of all I will miss Easyjet's people whose Orange Spirit helps them do their best to make travel easy and affordable for their customers every day", said McCall.

ITV finance chief Ian Griffiths was recently be promoted to a newly created combined role of COO and group finance director to lead the executive team for an interim period.

The airline said last week it would establish a new airline in Austria to protect its flying rights in the European union once Britain leaves the bloc.

McCall will face tough trading conditions at ITV, which is gripped by a declining television advertising market.
