Maryam Mirzakhani Cause Of Death: How Did The Fields Medalist Die?

Maryam Mirzakhani, a professor at Stanford University who was the first and only woman to win the Fields Medal in mathematics, has died. Later he twitted: A genius? Yes.

She was also the first Iranian to receive the prize, which is given every four years to exceptional mathematicians under the age of 40.

Born on May 3, 1977, in Tehran, Mirzakhani showed her knack for numbers from an early age, winning back-to-back gold medals in the 1994 and 1995 International Mathematical Olympiads.

The mathematician is survived by her husband Jan Vondrák, a Czech theoretical computer scientist and professor at Stanford, along with a daughter, Anahita. Her honors include the 2009 Blumenthal Award for the Advancement of Research in Pure Mathematics and the 2013 Satter Prize of the American Mathematical Society.

Mirzakhani was awarded the Fields Medal ― affectionately referred to as the "Nobel Prize for Mathematics" ― in 2014 for her work on dynamical systems and complex geometry.

"Maryam is gone far too soon, but her impact will live on for the thousands of women she inspired to pursue math and science", Stanford President Marc Tessier-Lavigne said in a statement. "Mirzakhani was the first Iranian woman elected to the National Academy of Sciences a year ago, in recognition of her 'distinguished achievement in original research.' She was in good company: Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell were past honorees". "But most of the time, doing mathematics for me is like being on a long hike with no trail and no end in sight", she remarked.

"It's like being lost in a jungle and trying to use all the knowledge that you can gather to come up with some new tricks, and with some luck you might find a way out", she added.

Mirzakhani studied mathematics in Iran and earned a PhD degree from Harvard in 2004.

Mirzakhani joined the faculty at Stanford in the San Francisco Bay area in 2008.

Firouz Naderi, her friend and NASA scientist, confirmed Mirzakhani's death on Instagram.
