'Aladdin' cast for live-action adaptation revealed

After a lengthy casting process, Disney has tapped Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott to portray Aladdin and Princess Jasmine in the upcoming retelling of the classic fairytale. Meanwhile, Will Smith will step into the role of the Genie, the character who was previously voiced by the late Robin Williams.

Disney has finally revealed the cast for its live-action reboot of Aladdin.

Aladdin is only one of a number of live-action updates of classic animated Disney films. It will be directed by Guy Ritchie. With today's news, it's confirmed Canadian actor Mena Massoud will play the role.

The casting news was revealed at Disney's fan convention, the D23 Expo, at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California, near Disneyland.

It seemed finding a male lead who can act and sing, in his 20s, was hard especially as the studio needed someone of Middle-Eastern or Indian descent.

The live-actionAladdin movie is set to start filming this summer and wrap filming in early 2018. Scott was born in London and is best known for playing Kimberly - or the Pink Ranger - in the newest Power Rangers movie. Aladdin is expected to go into production in the coming months, with a 2019 release date planned.
