Now, barely two weeks later, the Toffees are set to unveil 24-year-old Burnley defender Michael Keane as the club's third major signing of the summer transfer window, perhaps as early as Monday, according to a report from the BBC.

The defender is due to complete his medical with the Merseyside outfit on Monday ahead of signing a five year deal worth £90,000 per week.

The former Burnley and Manchester United defender told the official club website: 'I'm absolutely delighted to be at Everton, a fantastic football club with passionate fans a great tradition.

"He's 24 years old, his best years are to come, he's an England global, too, and I couldn't be more pleased that he's now a Blue", he added.

"Of course it was a temptation [to join Manchester United] - it's your boyhood club but you have got to take your heart out of it sometimes and think what's best for you, and I feel as if this is the best place for me to come and continue my development". It was a signing that proved to be inspired on the part of manager Sean Dyche, as the England youth worldwide was a rock at the back as the Clarets secured promotion to the Premier League. The 24-year-old hasn't shied away from the physicality of the Premier League and has also shown his composure in his defensive duties, stopping and distributing with assurance.

Keane made his full global debut in a friendly against Germany in March and played in a World Cup qualifier victory over Lithuania three days later.

"First and foremost, the manager was a big factor in me coming to the Club".

Keane becomes Ronald Koeman's fifth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Jordan Pickford, Davy Klaasen, Henry Onyekuru and Sandro Ramirez.

He made 35 Premier League appearances for the Clarets last campaign, and was linked with the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea in January.
