Several individuals are believed to have been killed or injured by the blast.

The authorities said it was one of three vehicle bombs that were meant to be blown up in crowded areas of the capital on Sunday, the first day back to work from the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

These attacks come as the government's Syrian Army resumes its offensive in the northeastern suburbs, aiming to reclaim rebel-controlled Jobar and Ayn Tarma.

The attack was the biggest in Damascus since a wave of suicide bomb blasts by jihadists in March left scores dead.

That attack was claimed by the Tahrir al-Sham alliance of insurgents, which is spearheaded by a militant group formerly known as the Nusra Front.
