The statement came after Trump tweeted, "Crime and killings in Chicago have reached such epidemic proportions that I am sending in Federal help".

For months, President Trump has vowed federal intervention to stem the plague of gun violence in Chicago.

As violence surged, Breitbart News reported that Chicago Police Board Chairwoman Lori Lightfoot wanted federal help.

According to the Sun-Times, there were about 760 killings in 2016, the deadliest year in Chicago in the past two decades. Trump wrote on Twitter. There were 1,935 shooting victims in the city during the same period past year.

In 2016, the number of murders in Chicago exceeded 760, a jump of almost 60 percent, and was more than NY and Los Angeles combined.

A mass shooting is defined as an incident involving four or more people.

At different points, he has said Chicago would solve all its crime problems by letting police get "very much tougher" than they are now, and called for "stop-and-frisk" policies - in which police are able to stop and search anyone they deem suspicious - to be enforced in black communities across the nation. The Chicago Sun-Times reports 20 additional ATF agents have been sent to Chicago.
