SpiceJet commits to buy Boeing's 737 MAX 10 planes worth $4.7 billion

The plane can accommodate 230 passengers in a single class configuration, in comparison to the 212 and 189 seats that fit in the Boeing 737-800 and 737-900 aircraft that SpiceJet now operates.

Industry sources said Airbus would also soon announce a large order for its A321neo, as well as one for 10 of its A350-900 wide-body jets.

"The entire 737 MAX family has been created to offer customers exceptional performance, flexibility and efficiency, with lower per-seat costs and an extended range that will open up new destinations in the single-aisle market", the statement added.

Aviation Week adds Boeing's "additional stretch (for the Max 10) takes overall length to 143 feet and increasing two-class capacity to 189 passengers, compared to 193 for its arch-rival, the Airbus A321neo".

After years of booming orders driven by increased air travel and more fuel-efficient planes, passenger jetmakers are bracing for a slowdown in demand while they focus on meeting tight delivery schedules and ambitious production targets.

India's SpiceJet airlines immediately announced it would buy 40 737 MAX airplanes.

The biggest 737 variant is set to get more than 240 orders from at least 10 different airlines, Boeing said at the launch announcement yesterday.

Changes to the cabin will allow airlines to add another 80 seats to the planes which carry around 500 passengers on average without reducing comfort.

The world has been given a peek at Boeing's plans for a new small twin-aisle aircraft, unofficially dubbed the 797.

Airbus and Boeing are expected to bring in about 200 new orders each at this week's show at Le Bourget, down from past years when Asian and Mideast carriers were growing fast.

"With the introduction of our 737 MAXs next year, we will be able to further expand our network, while keeping our costs low for our customers", Singh said.

SpiceJet now has a fleet of 55 planes, comprising 35 Boeing B 737s 20 Bombardier Q400s. That order includes 10 of the 737 Max 10 aircraft. The new order is worth about $2.5 billion at list prices.

"The addition of these 30 Boeing 787 aircraft to our portfolio makes us the world's largest owner of 787 Dreamliner", said AerCap CEO Aengus Kelly. Lion Air is the launch customer for the 737 MAX 9, and its Malaysian unit Malindo Air was first to take delivery of the MAX 8, the first MAX in commercial service.

"We think the timing's just right", Boeing chief executive officer Dennis Muilenberg said in an interview with Bloomberg TV.

The jet would fill a gap between Boeing's single-aisle 737 workhorse and its advanced long range 787.
