Violent turbulence injures 26 on China Eastern Airlines flight

Passengers onboard flight MU774 suffered injuries such as fractures when strong turbulence caused them to hit the overhead lockers and be hit by falling baggage, Xinhua said late on Sunday.

The injured were taken to the First People's Hospital of Yunnan Province and Yan'an Hospital Affiliated to Kunming Medical University, after the flight landed around 9 am, an hour later than scheduled, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Earlier this month, a China Eastern flight bound for Shanghai was forced to turn back to Sydney due to a mid-air emergency.

'We felt strong turbulence twice and minor turbulence three times.

A passenger on board the flight said that the plane experienced two violent bumps and then several smaller bumps that occurred over a 10-minute span.

Another middle-aged male passenger told Pear Video that he saw lightning strike outside the aircraft as the turbulence took place. Baggages fell on many of them as well.

China Eastern Airlines said on its microblog that it had arranged medical services but gave no other details. Upon landing, passengers even noticed a large hole in the plane near the engine.

"[We] remind all passengers, for your safety, please fasten seatbelts", the airline wrote. No one aboard the twin-engine Airbus A330 was injured.
