Trump under investigation for possible obstruction of justice

As Mueller begins to build his team to investigate allegations of collusion between Russian Federation and Donald Trump's political team to undermine the 2016 election, the president's conservative allies are digging in to discredit Mueller, who was appointed as special counsel by Trump's own Justice Department.

Ruddy later clarified to ABC News that Trump is "considering asking [Deputy Attorney General Rod] Rosenstein to terminate Mueller".

Two senators say they are disappointed that Attorney General Jeff Sessions has sent his deputy to testify before a committee hearing on the Justice Department's budget.

The notion was dismissed by senior White House aides later Monday evening, who said that Ruddy does not speak for the president.

Mueller is investigating alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign. "Republicans are delusional if they think the special counsel is going to be fair".

The letter said the investigation will also probe Comey's testimony that Loretta Lynch, as President Barack Obama's attorney general, had directed him to describe an FBI probe into Hillary Clinton's email practices as merely a "matter" and to avoid calling it an investigation.

Another conservative commentator, Byron York of The Washington Examiner, also called for Mueller's ouster, saying that the former FBI Director's longtime friendship with his successor at the FBI, Comey, caused a conflict of interest.

Why would Trump consider firing Mueller? Mr. Mueller had started selecting his team members, majorly comprised of criminal law experts.

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich spoke critically of special counsel Robert Mueller and his team, calling special counsels "very unsafe". "I think it's pretty clear by what one of his lawyers said on television recently".

And deputy White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said simply: "Chris speaks for himself". "Look who is hiring".

She, further, insisted that Sessions should fire Mueller, now that the President is not under investigation.

"In this case, we have what could serve as a trial balloon", he said on "Anderson Cooper 360", suggesting that it might be a way to test public reaction.

The top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, Adam Schiff, warned on Twitter that "If President fired Bob Mueller, Congress would immediately re-establish independent counsel and appoint Bob Mueller. Don't waste time trying to undermine one of your few allies".

He added that he believes it would be a mistake to fire Mueller, but said the "the basis of his investigation is flim-flam".
