Nate Walls, Juneteenth Celebration Participant, "I think everyone should know about it". On June 19, 1865 - more than two years later - Union soldiers entered Galveston, Texas, and told many people who thought they were still slaves that they were free.

Walls says one of the more important things about this event is to communicate and remember where we came from, so that we do not repeat our past. Though an award ceremony honoring community members for their involvement, service and longevity was held Friday night, Terrence Filer made a decision to forgo the air conditioned ceremony to help set up for Saturday's events.

"We want to kids to be engaged, and each facilitator is in charge of telling a story", she said.

We owe so much to General Granger and the news he brought to Galveston on the day we now call Juneteenth.
