Tottenham Hotspur eyeing move for Man United defender

Tottenham Hotspur are planning to offload defender Kevin Wimmer in the summer and will demand £20 million for his services, according to The Sun. It is there that Dier prefers to play despite having featured at centre-back for periods last season and occasionally at full-back.

The 27-year-old would have had high hopes heading into the campaign after winning the Players' Player of the Year award in the 2015/16 campaign, but it proved to be a frustrating campaign under Jose Mourinho for the centre-back.

His playing time in that position has been restricted as Victor Wanyama is the preferred choice in the middle of the park so Dier has been forced to settle for the role of "utility man" during his stay in north London.

United spent over £30m on Benfica's Victor Lindelof and it's widely expected the Swedish global will partner Eric Bailly as Jose Mourinho looks to challenge for the Premier League title next season.

However, it looks as though United are going to have to be prepared to dig deep as the newspaper says that Tottenham have informed the Reds they are ready to do business over a deal for Dier but only if their £50m asking price is met.

Tottenham are lining up a swoop for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling, but the Reds could ask for Eric Dier in return.

The Telegraph is reporting that Jose Mourinho sees the England worldwide as the long-term replacement for Michael Carrick, who himself made the journey from White Hart Lane to Old Trafford in 2006.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Manchester United will have to pay £50m to secure Dier as Carrick's long-term successor in midfield.

Carrick has been given another one-year extension to keep him at Old Trafford until the summer of 2018.
