N.Ireland's DUP says talks ongoing with PM May's Conservatives

The election, which took place on Thursday (June 8), resulted in a hung parliament with the Conservatives failing to win a majority.

Britain's bestselling Sun newspaper said senior members of the party had vowed to get rid of May, but would wait at least six months because they were anxious that a leadership contest could propel Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn into power. But the ballot-box humiliation has seriously - and possibly mortally - wounded her leadership just as Britain is about to begin complex exit talks with the European Union.

"We can confirm that the Democratic Unionist Party have agreed to the principles of an outline agreement to support the Conservative government", a spokesman for May said. She is seeking a so-called confidence and supply deal, which would involve the DUP supporting the Conservatives on key votes but not joining a formal coalition.

The Labour leader was just 2,227 votes away from being elected as the country's new Prime Minister.

Under pressure from Conservative cabinet ministers, May accepted the resignation of her two top aides, her co-chiefs of staff Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill, on Saturday.

May put on a courageous face after Thursday's vote, expressing sorrow for the MPs who lost their seats but refusing to acknowledge how her election gamble backfired.

May's authority over her party was shattered by the election result. DUP leader Arlene Foster told Sky News she would meet May on Tuesday.

"The talks so far have been positive". At the start of the campaign, she was enjoying poll leads of 20 points or more over the main opposition Labour Party.

"Theresa May's central claim which is no deal is better than a bad deal now becomes undeliverable because the DUP will never allow no deal".

Several lawmakers demanded the resignation of May's top advisers, who have been widely blamed for a disastrous policy to make the elderly pay more toward their care and a campaign seen as too insulated from ordinary voters and too focused on attacking her opponent.

In a measure of the desperation in Conservative ranks, Brady, who is chairman of the influential 1922 committee of Conservative lawmakers, suggested the party could end up relying on support from pro-Brexit opposition members of Parliament. This is the exact opposite of the strong and stable government Theresa May wanted as she called a general election after swearing a hole through a pot she wouldn't call one.

Johnson tweeted that an article in the Mail on Sunday newspaper headlined "Boris set to launch bid to be PM as May clings on" was "tripe". "The votes aren't there now in the (House of) Commons for taking Britain out of all the economic arrangements we have with the European Union", he said.
