YouGov Poll: British PM May Could Lose Majority in June 8 Election

The seat-by-seat prediction by market research company YouGov for The Times daily suggested that the Conservatives were on course to win 310 seats in the election - short of an absolute majority of 326 seats needed to form a government.

A total of seven polls carried out since the May 22 Manchester suicide attack have shown May's lead over the Labour Party narrowing, with some suggesting she might not win the landslide predicted just a month ago.

The Financial Times' compilation of average of polls showing still a 9 percent victory margin for the Conservatives, though it has shrunken by nearly 50 percent since the beginning of May.

The Conservatives' projected loss of about 20 seats would leave the party without an overall majority, thereby dashing May's plan to boost her numbers and strengthen her negotiating position in Britain's exit from the EU.

The exchange rate fell to €1.14426 to the pound as polls suggest there could be a hung parliament after the general election on June 8.

The claims have been made by Castle Point Labour candidate Joe Cooke, which come as a seat projection by pollster YouGov suggested that the United Kingdom could be heading for a hung parliament, with Labour making gains and Theresa May's Tories suffering losses.

Conservative chairman Sir Patrick McLoughlin may insist that the party is "very content" with the way the election is going but it is hardly controversial to state the campaign is not unfolding in the way Theresa May envisaged it would. Ironically, while the Conservative-SNP coalition would work out in terms of the number of seats, it would unlikely be an appropriate option due to the fundamental conflicts, such as Brexit and Scottish independence, between the two parties.

May was taunted by other party leaders for not attending a televised debate with them.

"The prime minister seems to have difficulties in meeting anyone or having a debate", Corbyn said.

Even if May can cling on to power - say, if she keeps her majority but it is reduced to single figures - her authority will be severely undermined and Brexit negotiators in Brussels will be confident they can weaken Britain's hand in talks.

"The sort of campaign I want to do is about meeting people and taking questions", she said.

But May had earlier told a campaign rally that "debates where the politicians are squabbling among themselves doesn't do anything for the process of electioneering".
